A Seattle University record that stood for over nine years was broken Friday morning as members of the Redhawk track and field team competed at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival at Cox Stadium.
In the women’s 10,000 meter run, Taylor de Laveaga (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.) both posted times faster than the previous school record of 38:04.46, set by Alana Garcia March 26, 2005. Finishing in 10th place was de Laveaga with a time of 37:17.52, while Hammerle crossed the finish line in 15th place with a mark of 37:48.99.
“We knew the women’s 10,000 record was going to go down, it was just a matter of how much and by whom,” Seattle U head track and field coach Trisha Steidl said. “It was great to see both ladies surpass the mark so significantly. I’m impressed with how both ladies approached the race.”
Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) finished 49th overall in the men’s 10,000 meter run with a time of 32:20.39. Later in the day, Baxter Arguinchona (Spokane, Wash.) finished 12th in his section and 57th overall in the men’s 5000 meter run with a time of 15:01.33.
“I’m bummed for Baxter that he got sick. Today’s performance still showed that he’s ready to pop a great one next time. Grubbs put together a solid effort today and was more focused than I’ve seen him. It was a good time on tired legs and shows his fitness is going in the right direction,” added Steidl.
The full Seattle University track and field team will make the annual trip to Spokane Falls Community College for the WAR VII meet Friday and Saturday, April 11-12. The hammer throw and 10,000 meter run will be contested Friday, April 11, starting at 4 p.m., with the rest of the meet taking place Saturday, April 12, beginning at 9 a.m.
