SEATTLE – It's off to the Bay Area for the Seattle University Redhawks, who next will compete in two California meets. The Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Stanford Invitational will both be on April 4 and 5. The Fanelli Classic will take place at host San Francisco State's campus, while the Stanford Invitational will be at Stanford's campus.
The outdoor season is well in action now, with this being Seattle U's fourth and fifth meets of the season. Last time out, a small contingent of Redhawks competed at the Peyton-Shotwell Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound. Zoe Tibbo and Matthew Fiso won their events there: Fiso won the triple jump, while Tibbo won both the long and triple jump.
Four new top-ten times came out of that meet for the Redhawks as well. Rock Gignac had two of them, with both the sixth-best discus throw (28.89m) and the tenth-best javelin (42.30m). Sean Ellison improved his previous career-best triple jump by .02m to record the eighth-best distance in SU history (13.32m). JR Zamora improved his long jump personal best from 6.56m to 6.58m, remaining second in SU history.
This is the third year in a row that the Redhawks have competed at both the Fanelli Classic and the Stanford Invitational. Last year saw four new all-time top-ten performances, including three by current Redhawks. Azalea Groleau had the second-fastest 5000m in SU history, a mark she has since better en route to the school record in that event at 16:46.75. Zamora had the seventh-best triple jump in SU history and has since moved to second all-time in that event at 13.80m. Lilianne Hargreaves moved into the 800m record books last year and has since improved to seventh all-time in that event with a 2:14.92 she recorded earlier this season.
The 2023 editions of the Fanelli Classic and Stanford Invitational also saw a number of new top-ten times for Seattle U. That included Livii Fetterley's sixth-best 100m Hurdles: she has since improved to fifth in SU history in that event. Taylor Marks had the seventh-best 100m in SU history that year: while she has since improved her personal-best time to 12.69 in that event, she remains seventh in the SU record books.
The Redhawks will split for two meets next. First up is the three-day Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. That meet runs April 16-18. Also on April 18 will be the Lewis & Clark Invitational in Portland.
