SEATTLE - In an effort to increase the visibility of the tennis community at Seattle U, the Redhawk tennis teams hosted the first-ever Alumni Hit Around and BBQ on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The event, held on the SU Tennis Courts, was arranged to introduce the 2019-20 men’s and women’s squads to Redhawk fans and alumni.
“What a turnout,” said Head Coach Joey Barnes. “This was a fantastic day. It was great to meet and greet everyone, and to watch our tennis community reach out and share their experiences with my team.”
The current players and the alumni also participated in a number of recreational doubles matches that were “really competitive and a lot of fun to watch,” according to Barnes.
A few of the many notable tennis alumni attending the event were Seattle U Hall-of-Famers Janet Hopps Adkisson (’56) and Dayna Guizzetti (’93), as well as John Curran (‘61), Steve Hopps (’67), and recent graduate Arshak Ghazaryan (’19).
“I want to thank everyone for making the day a successful beginning to the season,” said Barnes. “Our goal was to take the first step in building a strong, active SU tennis community. I am very comfortable in saying that we are well on our way.”
The women’s team kicks off their season on Oct. 4-6 at the WSU Cougar Classic, while the men wait to begin play until Oct. 24-29 for the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
